Welcome
If you are visiting Saugatuck and want to know a little more about Saugatuck and Douglas’ history, the Old Schoolhouse is the place to go. It was recently renovated by the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society and made it into a history center for visitors to learn Saugatuck and Douglas’ history. It has many historic attractions where visitors can learn. The Life Boat Exhibit shows an actual life boat that saved people from shipwrecks on Lake Michigan and has information on shipwrecks. The 1.16 acres of school grounds were transformed into a Back in Time Pathway. It takes through historical events that happened in the Saugatuck area. There are various learning areas and a Mt. Baldhead viewing platform. After all these years, the Schoolhouse is still used for learning and education, in a way it is still a school.
